FIRST POST OF A BRAND NEW GARDENING YEAR

We have endured a horrendous month of very heavy rainfall and high winds here in Norfolk. I have not been on the allotment at all for a month, due to the Christmas holidays.
I have been very fortunate, and escaped any serious wind damage. We have enjoyed harvesting, leeks and winter cabbages and using the stored potatoes.
Today was a cold sunny day, to herald my first visit to the allotment, in 2014. Three beautifully marked cock pheasants running for cover were the first thing that caught my eye when I arrived. Unfortunately they were gone before I was able to get my camera out.
I managed to spend an hour tidying up and pulling some of the infernal weeds that have sprung up, since I was last here. I am very pleased with the progress of the onions and broad beans that I planted in December, and I have a very good supply of greens.to last the rest of winter.

The barrow full of infernal weeds, pictured above, is a good example of how hardy they are, regardless of the weather conditions, they just keep on coming.
Quite a good number of seasonal garden plants are still in flower in spite of the adverse weather conditions. My favourite tiny snowdrop bulbs are peeking through, it is lovely to see splashes of colour all around the garden, we even have our old friend the yellow Veronica showing a few early flowers.
I spent an hour tidying up the front garden, pulling weeds from along the front border and removing dead leaves and litter that the wind has deposited among our shrubs.
I filled our bird feeders with seed, the Black-headed Gulls were above ,screeching as I did this, they tend to wait for the smaller birds to feed on the bird table and swoop down and pounce on any food that falls to the ground. We also have our resident Wood pigeons that clean up any seed that is dropped by the tiny birds that use the feeders.
A Very Good~"Day One", of my Gardening Year.
