A SPIDERS WEB

Spider with the web you weave
What do you wait to catch?
A passing fly foraging to survive,
Perhaps you are passing time
Waiting for your food to arrive.

Spider your hungry instincts believe
All winged creatures you catch
Are food to sate your appetite.
Food for thought to feed your mind
With the struggling captive still alive.

Spider tell me do you ever grieve
Over the many lives you despatch?
Do you ever speculate the right
To kill and then manipulate
Your prey before you consume it.

Spider, I wonder how you conceive
Your part in a very long process
To eat a fly that you cleverly capture
By spinning your intricate web.
A link in a very long food chain.

Spider, I wonder with no reprieve
A flying predator passing by,
Watches you waiting on your web
Swoops and snatches you for food
To feed a family in a cosy nest.

Spider, the lasting legacy you left
Before your sad, sudden demise,
You laid and expertly hid your eggs.
Then the babies become food again
Links in the eternal food chain.

A SHORT UNCERTAINTY

The wise man sat under an Apple tree
Staring into space.
A young girl approached and smiled.
"Are you really happy?"
Silence was a deafening curtained box
The blossom fell to the ground.
Breaking the silence noiselessly.

"My mummy says my daddy will die
Then he will be free
Of the terrible pains that torture him.
Will he be happy?"
The wise man smiled, "No-one knows
This truth little one,
Death is the only real certainty in life.

When I posted this on Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides Blog in answer to his Wednesday Poetry prompt, I discovered that the object was to write ten lines or less. After some revision I adjusted the poem to eight lines and I think it works very well.

"For today’s prompt, write a little poem. That is, write a poem of 10 lines or fewer. If you normally write long poems, do so in the first draft. Then, start deleting lines. Don’t worry; you can always save the longer version on your computer (or in your notebook). ***** Re-create Your Poetry! Revision..."

A COUNTDOWN POEM

Counting the days is an incredible chore
We can hardly wait for the magical day.
Life crawls by as we count the hours.
Until our ship arrives and we sail away.
Checking the details, patiently waiting,
For our dream to arrive and materialise.
The time drags slowly but life goes on.
Scanning the forecast watching the skies.

The days drag on, somehow we survive
The merciless countdown to getting away.
What is the weather like over there?
Can we escape on the appointed day?
Two whole weeks to go, our cases packed,
The postman arrives, the tickets are here.
We double-check, you're not taking that!
Perhaps that brolly's not such a good idea.

Seven days to go and counting the hours
Checking the suitcases and documentation.
Passports, money, insurance and tickets.
All part of our intense thorough preparation.
Re-checking the details as the week passes by.
Suddenly the countdown is nearing the day
Then the minutes are seconds, our driver arrives.
Zero hour! How time flies! Now we are on our holiday.

A SPACIOUS MISCONCEPTION

~
An eggplant growing in the hothouse
Shining, glossy, purple edibility,
A study in polished vegetable beauty.
Grown in a bed of nutritious goodness
Misted with a spray for moisturised taste.
~
The gardener smiled as he worked with care,
Nurturing and nursing his vegetive wonders.
His hands would sow seeds to precipitate
The change graduated to slowly deracinate
As the aubergine became an eggplant.
~
This aubergine was no ordinary eggplant.
A living entity, a mystical superfood.
To stiffen and shock the gourmet taste buds
Cultivated to precipitate with expectancy
A memorable flavour guaranteed to linger.
~
The waiter smiled as he took the order,
Eggplant, fried with tomatoes and chilli.
Chopped and fried with garlic and olives.
Cooked slowly on a bed of fluffy tender rice.
To the weaver of the magic woven in the kitchen.

THIRTEEN WAYS OF LOOKING AT SNOW

1 ~ I see flurries of silent snowflakes

falling, drifting, settling,

A winter wonderland is created.

2 ~ The snow hangs thickly

on the branches of bushes and trees.

Bending, almost breaking

beneath the weight.

3 ~ Garden birds search hungrily

for hidden food under the icy blanket.

Snow covers and hides all.

4 ~ Water is frozen, solid and hidden,

beneath the thick snowy blanket.

Thirsty birds and animals

lick snowflakes for moisture.

5 ~ A snowflake is a thing of beauty

ice crystals that shine

with geometric splendour.

6 ~ Children wrap warmly in scarves and gloves

to welcome the snow with joy.

Skating and sledging, to and fro

With whoops of sheer delight

7 ~ A snowman is built by children of all ages,

Mum and Dad and old Uncle Tom.

A carrot for a nose and an old battered hat

with a scarf around the neck.

8 ~ In the snowy wastes, travel

over the glassy smooth surface is fast,

furious and exhilarating.

9 ~ Visibility in a snowstorm is impaired,

the snow falling thickly, too dense to penetrate.

Snow blindness can result from the glare.

10 ~ Housebound by thick snowy drifts

the old folk are trapped indoors,

many look out desperately for help.

Sleigh bells ring jubilantly as horses arrive

with a sledge,

laden with food and warm clothing.

11 ~ Falling flakes add wonder to

the miracle of dazzling white snow.

A thick white carpet brings clean,

fresh magic everywhere.

12 ~ Life is harsh as plants push through

the snowy white blanket.

When the snow stops falling

sunlight begins the thaw.

13 ~ The world becomes a sea of slush

as the snow melts swiftly away.

Leaving behind a muddy, watery, dirty

sea of sludge.
