Ode to Rough Weather at Sea
by John Yeo
My stormy love affair with the ocean,
A gale force wind approaches the ship.
A warning is broadcast and relayed
The howling wind becomes severe.
"Batten down the hatches everywhere.
Hold on very tight and take care."
In an incredibly moving, awesome drama.
Black clouds cloak the sky spectacularly.
Windswept sheets of unruly sharp rain.
Wild waves pound and batter continually
The stabilisers struggle to take the strain
As the ship battles to stay afloat.
The swell of the water batters the vessel.
Huge waves in a continuing display
Racing and roaring in powerful splendour,
Foam-flecked beauty angrily pounding
The powerful force of an angry sea.
As the storm takes hold in a frenzy.
The wonder of the power that drove the quest
The storms on the seas that sailors feared
Through centuries of exploration and trade.
The brilliant blue, foam-capped water.
Deceptively cloaking the carnage below.
The unwary ships that lost the battle.
Against the powerful, mysterious, unruly sea.
