APRIL~”POEM-A-DAY”~DAY SEVEN~~~LOVE and/or ANTI-LOVE POEM

7/4/2015

Write a love poem. Yeah, I said a love poem, or, if you don’t like that option…
Write an anti-love poem. I know there are some haters out there; go ahead and hate on love and/or love poems if that’s your thing.
So if this is your first rodeo, here’s how the “Two for Tuesday” prompt works. You can choose one of the two options; choose both options; and/or blend the two together in some way. Just be sure to write a poem.

TO MARGARET
by John Yeo

Time stands still, moves ever more slowly
We are basking together in each others serenity.
We have been married now for ten wonderful years
When I first drowned in your sapphire blue eyes.

We get closer together as our minds converge,
Growing ever more unified as our minds coalesce
Time brings unity and understanding of one another,
First a friend, then a partner, now my wife.

Always my lover.

APRIL~”POEM-A-DAY”~DAY SIX ~THINGS-NOT-AS-THEY-APPEAR ~ POEM

6/4/2015

For today’s prompt, write a things-not-as-they-appear poem. Poetry is filled with metaphors, similes, symbols, and layered meanings, so this should be a softball prompt. If you’re struggling, look at your current surroundings, pick an object, and turn it into a metaphor for something. Or think of somebody in the real world (mail person, gas station attendant, etc.) and make up a secret double life for them. C’mon, you can do this.

LIFE OR DEATH
by John Yeo

Smashed-up, mashed-up-broken.
The lorry came from nowhere
My tractor landed upside down
My body tossed high in the air~

Unconscious, I am unaware
Of the pain and as I lie here.
I see the dawn break over fields
Seagulls following my tractor’s wheels.~

I follow the seasons as they change
I taste the yellowing sweet corn,
I wake to find I am suddenly free.
Doctors looking after me, have vanished.~

I have two choices or paths to take,
A broken, tragic, sad scarred man,
Or the peace and beauty of the fields
In my easy, dreamy, alternate state.~

APRIL~”POEM-A-DAY”~DAY FIVE~VEGETABLE POEM

5/4/2015

For today’s prompt, write a vegetable poem. I once wrote a poem titled “Tomatoes,” and that would count. If you want to write a poem about a specific vegetable, go for it. If you want to write a poem that just has a vegetable mixed in somewhere, go for it. If you want to praise or curse vegetables, go for it. If you want to play with the idea of vegetables, including a vegetable mental state, couch “potato,” and so on–well, you know, go for it.

CAULIFLOWER
by John Yeo

The ambulance arrived flashing blue lights
Paramedics raced to the scene
The fighter had been struck very hard
On his already damaged ear.
He was hit so very hard to the head
The feeling was if he recovered
He would be in a permanent vegetative state
Never to fight again.~

The emergency team got to work.
This man had been here before,
The heavyweight champion of the world
Was reduced to crying with fear.
This tearful recovery was welcomed
By medics and family alike,
He seemed to be back to normality
With a beautiful Cauliflower ear.~

A CARING SMILE
By John Yeo

I came here in terrible shock
The explosion came out of the blue,
Covered in third degree burns
My body blistered all over
With tears of pain in my mind
I awoke to a feeling of care and concern.

My outlook begged the questions
What happened? Where? Why me?
I spent days with the inner turmoil.
The Consultant, the Doctors, the Nurses
Did their utmost to ease the shock
Creating a feeling of care and concern.

I seem to have been here forever
Eight weeks have dragged slowly along
My life has been stitched together again
By the professionals working on me.
People who rebuilt my body and mind
With the utmost care and concern.

With my departure from the ward today
I give thanks to the caring professions.
Grateful smiles to the Nurses
Warm respect for the Doctors.
People who spent many hours
Putting my life together again.

I give you thanks for your care and concern.

APRIL~"POEM-A-DAY"~DAY THREE ~MACHINE POEM

3/4/2015

For today’s prompt, write a machine poem. A machine could be a car or a robot, obviously, but simple machines include levers, pulleys, and screws. There’s also “machine learning” and “deus ex machina.” But there are many other ways to come at this prompt as well.

THE DILEMMA
by John Yeo

I refuse to act quickly
I need time to consider.
Would I be a good Father
By agreeing to kill her?

My baby is on life support
She breathes through a machine.
Food, water and blood
Pumping through her being.

Her welfare is my only concern
I'm sure she will recover.
The Doctors agree she is brain dead,
I know her life is not over.

They would like to switch off
This life-giving machine
Then let Nature take its course
I have to give my permission.

This is a hard, sad situation
A very harsh dilemma
Should I tell them to pull the switch
Or pray for a miracle?

I fear for her future
If the doctors are right.
Her recovery would not be complete
My daughter will never be herself.

I refuse to act quickly
I need time to consider
Should I let them pull the switch
Give my permission and kill her?

APRIL~"POEM-A-DAY"~DAY Two ~secret POEM

2/4/2015

For today’s prompt, write a secret poem. The poem itself could be a secret, or it could be about keeping secrets or, I suppose, not keeping them. Or maybe it’s about a top secret project, or the poem is a riddle with some sort of secret meaning. Or, well, I’ll let you figure out how best to poem secretively.

CONFIDENTIALITY
by John Yeo

Ethically and morally
There is no other way.
I can demand and curse
I am sure you will not respond.
The oath you took is very strong,
I beg and hope in despair.
I ask the question once again,
Will my Mother, ever recover?

The coma has lasted a year,
It is tearing me to shreds.
My Mother requested your silence
To prevent me getting hurt.
Do you not think my not knowing
Is against her written wishes?
This silence is driving me insane.
I ask you desperately, once again.
Will my Mother ever recover?

You always respond to my fears,
With a reassuring calm reply,
You say the answer is not clear
My mother has a living sparking mind
The machines are essential to life
To prevent her slipping away.
Your answer to my fears, yet again
When I ask you desperately in my pain
Will my Mother ever recover?

You react to my pleas with alarm
You refuse to break your silence.
I am sure of her views on machines
Your treatment is a breach of trust.
Yet you continue to treat with the excuse
Your oath guides your reactions to life.

"First do no harm!"

APRIL~"POEM-A-DAY"~DAY one ~Resistance Poem

1/4/2015

For today’s prompt, write a resistance poem. There are many forms of resistance, including militant resistance, resistance to new ideas, the resistance in exercise, and maybe even a little resistance to starting a new project. I hope you don’t resist the urge to write a poem today.

MORPHIA
by John Yeo

He gritted his teeth
Clutched his hands
Until the pain subsided.
Resisting the urge to scream
Anything to find some relief.
The spasms continued unabated.

Waves of nausea overcame
The penetrating painful forces
He knew his resistance was low,
He prayed to God for the pain to ease,
For the sweet relief of morphia
Then he held his breath and waited.
