Welcome to Day 1 of the 2013 November PAD Chapbook Challenge! Let’s get some poeming done this month! For today’s prompt, write an appearing poem. This could be a poem about something (or someone) appearing out of nowhere. Or it could be about appearances–appearing one way to some people; appearing another way to others. If you’re new to my prompts, let me share one thing: I’m totally fine with you stretching the prompt in any direction you need to write; in fact, I encourage it. Now get poeming!

Day 1~~ Appearing poem

GRAY
Gray bleak sky above, cloudy. Autumnal,
Slight irritation in the nether regions, insignificant.
Just a small unprepossessing lump
Milkman delivers, rattling bottles
Then, thump the newspaper arrives
Gray headlines gray news to match the weather.

Make a call to the surgery, small talk with the desk,
This afternoon at 2pm alright, Doc is free then.
Nothing to get concerned about, surely.
A cup and saucer with a pot of Earl Gray?
Dustmen arrive in the noisy van, collect the trash,
The news is colourless, sadly gray to match the day.

Lunch is followed by a trip to the loo for a sample of pee,
Comb the hair to cover the gray. Quite distinguished?
I arrive at the doctors with time to spare, gray painted walls,
Gray covered chairs, with well used magazines
Gray waiting-room, full of gray-faced folk,
Anxiously waiting and queuing for who knows what?

Good morning Dr Gray! Sorry to trouble you, just to report
An odd looking lump has appeared down below today.
A thorough examination is soon under way,
Questions and detailed notes, a barrage of tests,
Blood tests and X-rays, isn't science wonderful,
Nothing to worry about surely. The lump is painless.

Urgent request, make another appointment with Dr Gray
Concerning your lump that appeared today
