Sheringham Library Creative writing group
Our next session will be on Monday January 5th when the homework is to write about 'The Wonder of it All' (see details below, and attached with examples). This could be a seasonal poem (though I am not asking for it to be one), or one that reflects upon the smaller or larger incidents, observations or ruminations of life, ones that reflect or represent an instance of the marvelous; occasions, sights, thoughts or feelings that stamp themselves indelibly on the memory or imagination. Allow yourself to give reign to a sense of wonder and awe at how extraordinary, even the ordinary in life can be. This might be an extension of, or antidote to, the aftermath of Christmas and a sense of heading off into a new year.
TWO POEMS
1
Knowledge is power the saying goes
Questioning, enquiring, wondering.
The depth of the unpacking is minute
Always the search for novelty show
As one wonder fades another is found
Knowledge tarnishes the outward sheen.
Consider an onion with many layers
Take the onion and begin to peel
Each layer builds on another.
The layers come off despite the tears
Each is another wonder to behold.
The sense of wonder increases,
As the layers are removed and reveal
Yet another layer to add joy to the wonder
Of the layers that have gone before.
When the centre of the onion is finally revealed
The power of knowledge becomes the wonder.

We have to appreciate wonder
To be able to ignore it.
A tiny seed starts the sequence,
Almost invisible to the eye.
Under the right conditions
Nurtured and fed and watered
A tiny shoot two leaves appear
Thrusting through the soil.
Growth begins, the leaves grow slowly.
Soon the plant is tall and strong.
Buds then develop into flowers
Attraction with perfume and beauty.
Fertilisation begins the process
Then fruitful food is produced,
Harvested from the healthy plant
That grew from a tiny seed.
Reproduction is made complete
Through the cycle of a tiny seed.
We have to acknowledge wonder
Before we can begin to ignore it.
