A Lakeside Walk in late Summer
We took a walk around our favourite lake at the weekend. The green trees and shrubs around the banks of the lake were as soothing and sensual as always. One sad aspect was the sight of a film of green pondweed that is gradually spreading over the surface of the water.
Quite a few Mallard ducks were around as we started our walk; swimming along the edges of the banks and foraging for food under the pondweed. A lot of camera-shy Moorhens swam for the centre of the lake as we approached. I heard a cry or alarm from a Moorhen in the centre of the lake. Several small splashes and ever-widening circles betrayal the presence of a large hungry Pike below the surface.
