"I just now realized self
storage really is where you store all your past selves."
WHERE A CHAMELEON STORES THE CHANGES
by John Yeo

I am delighted with the idea of a self storage department of the mind, where independently different facets of our self image are kept, ready for instant use.
Every day with every situation new experiences add to the self that is on display and a new, slightly differing self is created.
Most importantly there is the everyday self that is always on display to friends and family, this image is the relaxed unpolished casually usual self, where there isn't any room for airs and graces for fear of punishment by derision.
Then there is a second personality that appears from the storage section when the situation is ripe and ready. For example the boss is coming to dinner, or the parish priest is coming to tea, these sort of situations require a slightly more controlled self. A self that is strictly adhering to expected social behaviour, slightly less relaxed, more guarded.
Different gradations of these personal selves are stored ready for instant use as the occasion arises.
There is a very special self that is reserved for a great state occasion or another solemn occasion such as a family wedding where the self on display is very reserved and polished to generate the best possible impression.
I think everyone has gradations of a deeply hidden aggressive self that is always poised and ready to leap into action at the slightest outside threat of harm to friends and loved ones. This can be a self capable of assuming the protective armour of an aggressive self stance instantly.

A very well known example of self storage of differing states of mind or personality is illustrated in that amazing novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde."
The character of Dr Jekyll undergoes an incredible transformation when he drinks a potion and turns into the violent aggressive Mr Hyde.
In my view the self image of the violent Mr Hyde, must have been filed away in the storage department of Dr Jekyll's mind and the potion simply released a stored self that was already firmly established there. The two differing facets of the self of the character of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are totally unaware of each other in the novel.
Most people are totally unaware of the subtle differences in the self they project to the world or even that there is a self storage department hidden away that automatically assumes a self to match an occasion. A library that contains a huge well of past slightly differing self images to draw on.
