JACK TRUMPS QUEEN
By John Yeo
He’d gone to that well daily for the past five years. It was only today that fate would lead him to meet her there. An elderly lady dressed in worn out clothes, that could be described almost as rags. Yes, the rags and tatters of a poor lifestyle. No amount of mending and making-do would ever bring them back to their former glory.
An aged lady, very refined and gentle in her mannerisms, revealing a very well to do past that had suddenly changed radically.
The lines and wrinkles embedded in her face were the clues that age, and the corrosive cares and worries, brought on by the shock of losing a very close, strong support in her life was taking a deadly toll.
Unnoticed by the many thirsty visitors to the well, who came to quench their thirst and to draw water for the animals, the lady sat on the ground and seemed to be sitting, waiting.
He watched as she was totally ignored, in the rush and bustle of people drawing water from the well. Then suddenly a smile beamed across her face as a child brought her a refreshing cup of water, it was as if the sun had suddenly appeared. “Thank-you!” she exclaimed!
I heard later that her husband had been an infamous dictator in that very small part of the world, she had enjoyed a fabulous lifestyle that ended suddenly with his death by execution. Now shunned and ignored by all, her family scattered and in hiding, she was reduced to begging and she was slowly fading away. A sad ironic shadow of her former days spent in the reflected glory of a powerful king.
