PLANET PEARL
by John Yeo

30 minute writing prompt~A visit to an icy planet, focus on the  flora and fauna, use your imagination. Create whatever you want to exist there.

                                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We landed on the ice-covered frozen planet of Pearl, the second planet, with the greatest distance from the Sun. In our solar system the Sun is the powerhouse and the closest planets to the Sun are deserts. Our planet Agas was at the halfway point between the Sun and the icy far planet of Pearl.
We were greeted with much warmth from the hardy natives who were raised here and very able to survive the exteme temperatures generated under the harsh conditions on this extreme world.
Two chiefs ruled over this icy domain. One a very skilled practioner in the art of planetary maintainence, a very able chief and overall champion of the administrative workings of the planet Pearl. He had an assembly of lesser chiefs responsible for running the various departments of this icy floating planet, orbiting through the rough denizons of outer space.
The second chief was the chief of the parliament of extreme emotion. His charge was to keep the population happy and to inject warmth into the icy proceedings of the day-to-day conditions on the planet Pearl. This chief was an accomplished practitioner in the art of communication and a very skilled, self-promoting politician, able to appeal to many strands of emotion. He had a very able and skilled, obedient team of staff, who attended on him and were expected to act on his every word, paying homage to every one of his outlandish whims.
The flora we encountered on this incredible ice-covered world was unusual and exotic to our eyes. There were many edible frozen barnicles that attached themselves to everything, everywhere. The planetary chefs on this amazing world were able to create many tasty, nutricious dishes from this prolific icy resource. Much flora was obtained from the ice forests that grow prolifically all over the planet.
Many of the visitors to this icy world were tourists on holiday in the depths of the stormy reaches of outer Space. Buffeted by the icy winds and rocky conditions, these hardy, temporary visitors enjoyed the extreme conditions they found on this frozen icy world.
An empty glass~A broken pencil lead~A twitching eye,~A stranger.
by John Yeo
The storm had subsided when he entered the cottage. It had been a very rough night, with some damage to the homes in the village. A mighty Oak tree, that grew in the middle of the village green, had lost several branches to the very fierce winds.
The first thing that caught his eye as he closed the cottage door was an empty glass sitting in the middle of the coffee table. She usually took her medicine before she retired and took the glass of water into the bedroom with her. After a moment he realised this was a wine glass and he could still smell the residue of the wine in the bottom of the glass. Dutch courage he thought, as he took the empty glass into the kitchen. With the storm raging and shaking the cottage, she had probably had a drink before retiring for the night.
She had left him a note that looked half-finished. There was a pencil with a broken lead, lying on the table and he grinned, she had been too tired to sharpen the pencil and finish the note. Which read~
~ “I have gone to bed early as I have a………..X~
He smiled and his eye twitched as he thought of her cursing as she was unable to complete the note, amid the raging storm. She had always teased him about his twitching left eye that refused to stay still when he smiled.
Then with a crash, the bedroom door flew open and a stranger, dressed in black, rushed at him, knocked him down with an iron bar and fled through the cottage door, He fell to the ground with blood spurting from a gash in his head.
When he finally came to and felt the pain throbbing in his head, he took a minute or two to come back to consciousness. He struggled to his feet as he realised what had happened and he entered the bedroom.
The scene that met his eye shook him to the core of his being. There lying lifeless on the bed was his mauled, beaten molested wife, mutilated almost beyond recognition. It looked as if she had been attacked with an iron bar repeatedly beaten and beaten to death. The shock was overpowering and he staggered back with a sharp pain in his chest radiating through his left arm, as he had a massive heart-attack and died instantly.
